Cheezies Marshmallow Treats Ingredients & Substitutions

With only four simple ingredients, these treats come together in minutes.

  • Salted butter: Adds richness and helps create a smooth, buttery marshmallow mixture. Unsalted butter can be used; simply add an extra pinch of salt.
  • Mini marshmallows: The base of the recipe that holds everything together. Folding in extra marshmallows at the end creates little pockets of gooey goodness throughout the treats.
  • Cheezies: The star ingredient! Make sure to get the crunchy kind, not the puffed. Use gluten-free Cheezies if needed. Roughly chopping them creates the perfect texture. I used the Hawkins brand.
  • Fine sea salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the cheesy flavor. Kosher salt works as well.

How To Make Cheezies Marshmallow Treats

This recipe couldn’t be easier and comes together in just a few simple steps. The key is to mix everything gently so the treats stay soft and chewy.

Step 1: First, prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan with a sheet of parchment paper and lightly coat it with non-stick baking spray.

Step 2: Next, in a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter with 8 cups of the mini marshmallows, heating in two one-minute intervals and stirring gently until completely smooth.

Step 3: Stir in the chopped Cheezies and sea salt until evenly coated. Let the mixture cool for about one minute.

Step 4: Lastly, fold in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows just until combined.

Step 5: Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and gently press it into an even layer. Avoid packing it down firmly to keep the treats soft.

Step 6: Allow the treats to cool completely before slicing into squares and serving.

Cheezies Marshmallow Treats Helpful Hints

A few simple tips will help make these marshmallow treats perfectly soft every time.

  • Don’t overheat the marshmallows: Heat only until melted to prevent the treats from becoming tough.
  • Mix gently: Overmixing or pressing too firmly into the pan can make the bars dense.
  • Use fresh marshmallows: Fresh marshmallows melt more smoothly and stay softer.
  • Line the pan: Parchment paper makes removing and slicing the treats much easier.

Fun Flavor Twists

These treats are delicious as written, but they’re also easy to customize depending on the occasion or your favorite snacks.

  • Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper for a sweet-and-spicy version. Or switch up the Cheezies themselves for a spicy/hot version.
  • Extra Crunch: Stir in a handful of chopped peanuts or pecans.
  • Cheesy Blend: Mix regular Cheezies with white cheddar puffs for a fun flavor and texture combination.
  • Chocolate Drizzle: Once cooled, drizzle melted dark chocolate over the top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these gluten-free?

Yes! Simply use gluten-free Cheezies and double-check that your marshmallows are gluten-free. Fun fact, most cheezies are gluten -free as is.

Can I use large marshmallows instead of mini marshmallows?

Absolutely. Just weigh the marshmallows for the most accurate measurement. For the final addition of marshmallows though, I would suggest cutting them up into small pieces.

Why are my marshmallow treats hard?

They were likely overheated or packed too firmly into the pan. Gentle mixing and light pressure help keep them soft.

Can I freeze them?

Yes! Store them in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 6 months. Let them thaw at room temperature before enjoying.

How should I store leftovers?

Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week, although they’re best enjoyed the same day they’re made.
