The Best Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting
This frosting is one of those staple recipes that works for almost everything. Itโs smooth, fluffy, packed with real lemon flavor, and comes together with just a handful of ingredients. Here’s why you’ll love it:
- Bright Lemon Flavor: Fresh lemon zest and juice add a vibrant citrus taste that feels light and refreshing.
- Ultra Creamy Texture: The combination of butter and cream cheese creates a smooth, fluffy frosting that spreads and pipes beautifully.
- Perfectly Balanced: Tangy cream cheese keeps the sweetness from becoming overpowering.
- Easy to Make Vegan: Simply use vegan butter and vegan cream cheese for a dairy-free/plant-based version.
- Versatile Recipe: Delicious on cupcakes, layer cakes, loaf cakes, sugar cookies, and more.

Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients
This recipe uses simple ingredients that work together to create a rich and creamy frosting with a fresh lemon finish.
- Salted Butter: Adds richness and structure. Vegan butter works great as a substitute, but it needs to be in brick form, not spreadable. I love to use Becel plant-based bricks.
- Cream Cheese: Gives the frosting its signature tangy flavor and creamy consistency. Use full-fat cream cheese for the best results. Use a plant-based alternative if needed, make sure it’s in brick form. I prefer to use Violife.
- Powdered Sugar: Sweetens the frosting while helping create a smooth texture. You can add slightly more for a firmer piping consistency. If you are vegan, make sure it is not processed with bone char.
- Lemon Zest: Brings concentrated lemon flavor and aroma. Fresh zest is highly recommended.
- Lemon Juice: Adds brightness and a little acidity to balance the sweetness. Again, fresh is best.
- Fine Sea Salt: Enhances all of the flavors and balances the frosting.
- Yellow Gel Food Coloring: Optional, but adds a soft lemony color for decorating.

Cream Cheese Lemon Frosting Step-by-Step Instructions
This frosting comes together quickly, but whipping it well creates the lightest and fluffiest texture. Grab a mixer, ready the spatula, and let’s make some frosting!
- Cream the butter and cream cheese: In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter, cream cheese, and lemon zest on high speed for 5โ10 minutes until light and fluffy.
- Add the remaining ingredients: Add the powdered sugar and salt and mix on low until starting to combine. Add in the lemon juice and optional food coloring if using and mix on low speed until combined.
- Whip until fluffy: Increase the mixer speed to high and whip for 5 minutes until smooth and airy, scraping the bowl as needed.
- Chill if needed: Use immediately or cover and chill until ready to use.
Lemon Cream Cheese Buttercream Helpful Hints
A few simple tricks will help you get the best creamy texture and lemon flavor every time.
- Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Soft butter and cream cheese blend together much more smoothly.
- Zest Before Juicing: Itโs much easier to zest lemons before cutting them open.
- Donโt Skip the Whipping Time: Whipping creates a noticeably lighter and fluffier frosting texture.
- Chill for Firmer Piping: If the frosting feels too soft, refrigerate it for 20โ30 minutes before piping.
- Use Gel Coloring: Gel food color adds color without thinning the frosting consistency.

Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting Fun Flavor Twists
This lemon frosting is delicious on its own, but itโs also easy to customize depending on what youโre baking. Try one of these fun variations for a different flavor profile.
- Berry Lemon Frosting: Add freeze-dried raspberry or strawberry powder for a fruity twist.
- Vanilla Lemon: Mix in a splash of vanilla extract for a softer citrus flavor.
- Coconut Lemon: Add a touch of coconut extract for a tropical vibe.
- Extra Tangy: Increase the lemon zest for a bolder citrus punch.
- Honey Lemon: Add a small drizzle of honey for a warm, floral sweetness.
- Chocolate Cookie Twist: Add ยฝ cup of chocolate cookie crumbs for a decadent chocolate lemon version.

This frosting stores well and can easily be made ahead.
- Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
- Freezer: Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before re-whipping.
