  • Soft & Tender Texture: The gluten-free flour blend creates a fluffy, tender crumb that stays moist for days.
  • Naturally Sweetened With Honey: Honey adds both sweetness and depth of flavor that pairs perfectly with the rose water.
  • Light Floral Flavor: Just a touch of rose water creates a delicate, aromatic cake without being overpowering.
  • Simple One-Layer Cake: No complicated layering or decorating required, making it perfect for easy entertaining.
  • Dairy-Free Friendly: Easily swap in dairy-free butter and milk alternatives with great results.

Gluten-Free Honey Rose Cake Ingredients

This cake uses simple pantry ingredients, with honey and rose water bringing the unique flavor profile. Here’s what you’ll need and why each ingredient matters.

Cake

  • Gluten-Free 1:1 Baking Flour: Provides structure and a soft crumb. Use any cup-for-cup gluten-free blend that contains xanthan gum. Regular all-purpose flour works for a non–gluten-free version.
  • Baking Powder: Helps the cake rise and stay light. Do not substitute with anything else.
  • Fine Sea Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the honey flavor. Table salt can be used if that’s what you have.
  • Salted Butter: Adds richness and moisture to the cake. Dairy-free butter works perfectly as a substitute.
  • Honey: Naturally sweetens the cake while adding warmth and flavor. Maple syrup can work in a pinch, though the flavor will change slightly.
  • Granulated Sugar: Helps create a tender texture and balances the honey sweetness. Organic cane sugar would be an excellent swap.
  • Eggs: Provide structure and help bind the cake together. Room temperature eggs mix more smoothly into the batter.
  • Rose Water: Adds a delicate floral note that makes this cake unique. Orange blossom water could be used for a slightly different floral flavor.
  • Buttermilk: Adds moisture and a subtle tang for balance. Dairy-free buttermilk works great (plant milk + lemon juice or vinegar).

Buttercream

  • Salted Butter: Creates a rich, creamy frosting. Use dairy-free butter if needed, just make sure it is in brick form.
  • Honey: Adds natural sweetness and a smooth, soft flavor to the frosting.
  • Powdered Sugar: Thickens and sweetens the buttercream while keeping it fluffy.
  • Rose Water: Gives the frosting the same light floral flavor as the cake.
  • Fine Sea Salt: Balances sweetness and enhances the honey flavor.

Gluten-Free Rose Cake Step-by-Step Instructions

This cake comes together quickly with just a few simple steps and a single cake pan. Preheat the oven, grab a spatula, and let’s start baking.

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare an 8-inch cake pan with non-stick spray and parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugars: In a stand mixer or large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the butter, honey, and granulated sugar on high speed for 3 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape the bowl halfway through.
  4. Add eggs and rose water: Mix in the eggs and rose water until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  5. Add dry ingredients and milk: Mix in half of the flour mixture on low speed. Slowly pour in the buttermilk, then add the remaining flour mixture. Mix until just combined and smooth.
  6. Bake: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared cake pan and bake for about 45 minutes, until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  8. Make the buttercream: Beat the butter and honey on high speed for 5–10 minutes until very light and fluffy.
  9. Finish the frosting: Add powdered sugar, rose water, and salt. Mix on low until combined, then increase to high and beat for another 5 minutes until fluffy.
  10. Frost and decorate: Spread the buttercream over the cooled cake. Decorate with dried roses, sprinkles, or a drizzle of honey if desired.

Honey Rose Cake Fun Flavor Twists

One of the best things about this gluten-free rose cake is how easily it can be customized. The honey base pairs beautifully with many flavors.

  • Lemon Honey Rose Cake: Swap the milk for lemon juice and add fresh lemon zest to the batter for a bright citrus twist.
  • Pistachio Honey Rose Cake: Fold finely chopped pistachios into the batter for texture and a Middle Eastern–inspired flavor.
  • Berry Honey Rose Cake: Top the frosted cake with fresh raspberries or strawberries.
  • Orange Blossom Version: Swap the rose water for orange blossom water for a different floral note.
  • Almond Honey Cake: Add a splash of almond extract to complement the honey and rose flavors.

Gluten-Free Honey Rose Cake Helpful Hints

A few simple baking tips will help ensure your honey rose cake turns out soft, fluffy, and perfectly balanced in flavor.

  • Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Butter, eggs, and buttermilk mix together more smoothly and create a better cake texture.
  • Measure Gluten-Free Flour Carefully: Spoon and level your flour to avoid a dense cake.
  • Don’t Overmix: Mix just until the batter is combined to keep the cake light and tender.
  • Use Rose Water Sparingly: A little goes a long way; too much can make the flavor overpowering.
  • Cool Before Frosting: Make sure the cake is fully cooled so the buttercream doesn’t melt.
