Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars Ingredients & Substitutions

This recipe uses pantry staples with simple swaps to suit your preferences. Pay close attention to the dairy-free/vegan swaps if needed.

  • Creamy peanut butter: The base of the bars, providing richness and structure; use no-stir for the best texture.
  • Maple syrup: Adds natural sweetness and helps bind everything together. Honey works too, if not strictly vegan.
  • Coconut oil: Helps soften the mixture and adds a smooth texture; can sub with butter if preferred.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the overall flavor with a warm sweetness. Omit if you do not have any handy.
  • Vanilla protein powder: Adds protein and structure; use your favorite dairy-free/plant-based blend if needed. I love to use Arbonne or Orgain.
  • Almond flour: Keeps the bars soft and slightly chewy. Oat flour can be used as a swap.
  • Coarse sea salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the chocolate flavor.
  • Dark chocolate chips: Melted for the topping; choose dairy-free/plant-based if needed. I use Pasch 85% cocoa chips.
  • Milk: Helps smooth out the chocolate topping. As with the chocolate, use your favorite kind of dairy-free/plant-based milk, if needed. I personally use unsweetened almond milk.
  • Optional toppings: Chopped peanuts and extra sea salt for crunch and flavor.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars Helpful Hints

A few simple tips will help you get perfect bars every time.

  • Use no-stir peanut butter: Natural peanut butter can be used, but know that due to the oil content is may affect the texture. I prefer using an unsweetened, no-stir peanut butter for the best consistency.
  • Adjust consistency if needed: If the dough feels too dry, add a tiny splash of milk; too soft, add a bit more almond flour.
  • Press firmly: Compacting the base well helps the bars hold together when sliced.
  • Don’t overheat chocolate: Melt in short intervals to avoid burning or seizing.
  • Chill completely before slicing: This ensures clean cuts and firm bars.

Fun Flavor Twists

Once you’ve made these once, there are so many ways to switch them up depending on your cravings.

  • Chocolate Swirl Base: Mix a tablespoon of cocoa powder into the base for a double chocolate vibe.
  • Crunchy Peanut Butter: Swap creamy for crunchy to add texture throughout.
  • Spicy Sweet Kick: Add a pinch of cayenne or drizzle with a little hot honey for that sweet-heat combo.
  • Cookie Dough Style: Stir in a few mini chocolate chips to the base.
  • Almond Joy Inspired: Add shredded coconut and use almond butter instead of peanut butter
