The Best Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Frosting

This vegan frosting is the perfect balance of creamy, tangy, and sweet; just like classic cream cheese frosting, but completely dairy-free. Here’s why you’ll love it:

  • Perfect Tangy Flavor: That classic cream cheese taste with a smooth, dairy-free twist
  • Light & Fluffy Texture: Whipped until airy and silky for easy spreading and piping
  • Simple Ingredients: Made with just a handful of easy-to-find dairy-free staples
  • Versatile Use: Perfect for cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, and more

Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients

This frosting comes together with just a few ingredients, each playing an important role in creating the perfect texture and flavor.

  • Dairy-free butter: Creates a rich, creamy base. Use a firm block-style butter, not a spreadable tub; you can swap brands depending on preference. I love to use Becel plant-based salted bricks.
  • Dairy-free cream cheese: Adds tang and structure. Much like the butter, it must be in block-style form. Violife has been my favorite so far.
  • Powdered sugar: Sweetens and stabilizes the frosting.
  • Vanilla extract: Adds depth of flavor. You can swap with vanilla bean paste.
  • Fine sea salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances flavor. Kosher salt will work as well.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This frosting comes together quickly, but proper mixing is key for the best texture. So grab a spatula, measure out the ingredients, and let’s go!

  1. Whip base: In a stand mixer, beat the dairy-free butter and cream cheese on high speed until light and fluffy. Approximately 5-10 minutes.
  2. Add ingredients: Add powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix on low until combined.
  3. Whip until fluffy: Increase speed to high and beat until smooth and fluffy, scraping the bowl as needed.
  4. Chill if needed: Use immediately or chill slightly if the frosting is too soft for piping.

Fun Flavor Twists for Cream Cheese Frosting

This frosting is a great base for experimenting with different flavors depending on what you’re pairing it with.

  • Lemon Zest: Add fresh lemon zest and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for a bright citrus twist
  • Salted Caramel: Add ¼ cup of thick salted caramel sauce for a sweet and salty caramel cream cheese frosting
  • Vanilla Bean: Use vanilla bean paste for a more intense vanilla profile
  • Berry Boost: Add a spoonful of thick berry puree or jam for a fruity version
  • Chocolate Swirl: Mix in a bit of cocoa powder for a chocolate cream cheese frosting

Dairy-Free Cream Cheese Frosting Helpful Hints

A few simple tips will help ensure your frosting turns out perfectly smooth and fluffy.

  • Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Helps everything blend smoothly without lumps.
  • Choose the Right Butter/Cream Cheese: Block-style butter and cream cheese give the best structure. Skip the spreadable versions.
  • Don’t Skip the Whip Time: Beating long enough creates that light, airy texture.
  • Adjust Consistency: Add more powdered sugar if too soft, or, what I prefer, chill briefly. This will prevent an overly sweet cream cheese frosting.
  • Scrape the Bowl Often: Ensures everything mixes evenly
  • Re-Whip: If using frosting from the fridge, give it a quick whip on high to smooth out any lumps or bumps.
