Ingredients & Substitutions For Cornflake Crack

Here’s a simple breakdown of the pantry staples that make this recipe shine. Each ingredient plays a role in building that signature crunchy-toffee texture, and most can be swapped to fit gluten-free or vegan needs. No speciality items required; just everyday basics.

  • Salted Butter: Creates the caramelized toffee base. Swap for plant-based butter to keep it dairy-free or vegan.
  • Brown Sugar: Melts into the butter to create that classic chewy-crackly toffee texture. Light or dark both work.
  • Cornflakes: The crunchy base of the recipe. Use gluten-free and/or vegan cornflakes if needed.
  • Chocolate Chips: Melt into either a drizzle or a full top layer, depending on preference. Use plant-based chocolate chips if desired.
  • Fine Sea Salt: Enhances the caramel flavour and balances the sweetness.
  • Optional Toppings: Flaky sea salt or festive sprinkles add texture and a fun finishing touch.

Fun Flavor Twists

If you love the original but want to play with new add-ins or topping ideas, I have you covered. These variations keep the spirit of classic cornflake crack but add fun, bold flavours to suit any season or craving. Each one brings something a little different to the mix.

  • Peanut Butter Drizzle: Swirl warm peanut butter into the melted chocolate for a salty-sweet finish and sprinkle on some finely chopped peanuts.
  • Holiday Peppermint: Add crushed candy canes on top for a festive winter twist.
  • Espresso Chocolate: Mix a pinch of instant espresso into the melted chocolate for a mocha-inspired version.
  • White Chocolate: Use white chocolate chips instead of regular ones.

Christmas Crack Helpful Hints

A few simple tips make this recipe even easier and guarantee the best texture and crunch. These pointers help you avoid common mistakes and get clean, crisp shards every time. Small adjustments that make a big difference.

  • Stir Constantly: Keeps the toffee smooth and prevents burning.
  • Work Quickly: The mixture begins to set fast, so mix and spread immediately.

    1. I don’t take the temperature, I let it it come to a boil and whisk continuously for 3 minutes. It’s good to go after that. No need for a thermometer.
