Ingredients & Substitutions for Gluten-Free Chocolate Crinkle Cookies
Each ingredient plays a key role in delivering that signature crinkly texture and rich chocolate flavour. Here’s what you’ll need and how you can adjust it if necessary.
- Granulated Sugar: Sweetens and helps the tops crack. Can substitute coconut sugar, organic cane sugar, or monk fruit.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Provides deep chocolate flavour; Dutch-processed works too.
- Vegetable Oil: Keeps the cookies soft and moist. You can use melted coconut or any neutral oil.
- Eggs: Bind the dough and add structure. For an egg-free/vegan swap, use 2 flax eggs.
- Instant Coffee (Optional): Enhances the cocoa flavour without adding coffee taste.
- Gluten-Free 1:1 Flour: Creates structure while keeping them tender. Swap with all-purpose flour if not GF.
- Baking Powder: Helps the cookies lift and crack open.
- Salt: Balances sweetness.
- Powdered Sugar: Coats the dough for that signature crinkle effect. You can use a sugar-free version such as Swerve.
