Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes Ingredients & Substitutions

This recipe is made in two parts: the moist chocolate cupcakes and the fluffy peanut butter buttercream. Each ingredient has a purpose, and there are easy swaps to make them gluten-free and dairy-free if needed.

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • Flour: All-purpose flour works perfectly, or swap for a gluten-free 1:1 blend.
  • Cocoa Powder: Unsweetened cocoa gives that rich chocolate flavor; Dutch-process or black cocoa also works.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar adds sweetness and structure.
  • Baking Soda: The leavening agent that helps the cupcakes rise.
  • Salt: Balances sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • Instant Coffee Powder: Optional, but enhances the depth of chocolate.
  • Milk: Regular or plant-based, used hot to bloom the cocoa powder.
  • Vegetable Oil: Keeps the cupcakes soft and moist. Any neutral testing oil will work.
  • Sour Cream: Adds richness and tang; plant-based sour cream works well, too. You can also use plain Greek yogurt or mayonnaise.
  • White Vinegar: Reacts with baking soda to make the cupcakes fluffy.

Peanut Butter Buttercream

  • Butter: The creamy base of the frosting; dairy or plant-based butter both work.
  • Peanut Butter: Smooth, no-stir peanut butter is best for a silky texture. Brands such as Jik, Skippy, and Kraft are great.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sweetens and thickens the frosting.
  • Sea Salt: Just enough to balance the sweetness.
  • Optional Decor: Top with peanut butter cups (use dairy-free chocolate if needed).

Step-by-Step Instructions

Making these cupcakes is straightforward and beginner-friendly, but the results taste bakery-level. You’ll only need one bowl for the cupcake batter and a mixer for the frosting, which keeps cleanup simple. Just follow these steps for rich, moist chocolate cupcakes topped with fluffy peanut butter buttercream.

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a cupcake tray with 12 liners.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, salt, and instant coffee (if using).
  3. Mix wet ingredients: Create a well and add hot milk, oil, sour cream, and vinegar. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Bake: Divide batter evenly into liners and bake 18–22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  5. Make frosting: Beat butter and peanut butter until fluffy (5–10 minutes). Add powdered sugar and salt, then whip for another 5 minutes.
  6. Decorate: Pipe the frosting onto cooled cupcakes and top with peanut butter cups if desired.

Peanut Butter & Chocolate Cupcakes Tips & Tricks

A few simple tricks will help you get the very best results every time.

  • Bloom the Cocoa: Make sure the milk is hot to deepen the chocolate flavor.
  • Room Temperature Ingredients: For smooth mixing, bring sour cream and butter to room temperature first.
  • Whip It Good: Don’t skimp on the frosting whip time—it makes the buttercream extra fluffy.
  • Cool Completely: Only frost fully cooled cupcakes, or the buttercream will melt.

Fun Flavor Twists for Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcakes

Want to play with flavors? These cupcakes are the perfect base for creative twists.

  • Chocolate Ganache Core: Fill the center of each cupcake with chocolate ganache for an extra indulgent surprise.
  • Salted Caramel Swirl: Drizzle caramel sauce on top of the frosting for a sweet-salty kick.
  • Nutty Crunch: Add chopped peanuts or pretzels into or over the frosting for crunch.
  • Double Chocolate: Swap the peanut butter frosting for chocolate buttercream and use peanut butter drizzle instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these cupcakes ahead of time?

Yes! You can bake the cupcakes a day or two in advance and store them in an airtight container at room temperature. For the best texture, wait to frost until the day you plan to serve them.

How do I store chocolate peanut butter cupcakes?

Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, refrigerate them for up to 5 days or freeze cupcakes for up to 3 months. Thaw frozen cupcakes at room temperature before serving.

Can I make these gluten-free and/or dairy-free?

Absolutely. Use a gluten-free 1:1 flour blend, plant-based milk, sour cream, and butter. The recipe works beautifully with these swaps, and the cupcakes stay moist and tender.

Do I need to use instant coffee in the cupcake batter?

No, it’s optional. The instant coffee doesn’t make the cupcakes taste like coffee—it simply enhances the chocolate flavor. You can leave it out if you prefer.

What kind of peanut butter is best for the frosting?

A smooth, no-stir peanut butter (like the kind made for spreading, not natural peanut butter with oil separation) works best for a creamy, stable frosting.

Can I double this recipe for a party?

Yes! This recipe doubles easily if you need more cupcakes. Just make sure to use two muffin pans and rotate them halfway through baking for even results.
