Chocolate Chip Cupcakes Ingredients & Substitutions
These chocolate chip cupcakes use simple pantry staples to create soft, fluffy vanilla cupcakes packed with melty chocolate chips.
For the Cupcakes
- Flour: Use all-purpose or a gluten-free 1:1 baking blend with xanthan gum.
- Baking Powder: Our leavening agent that creates lift and ensures the cupcakes rise beautifully. Do not use baking soda.
- Fine Sea Salt: Enhances the sweetness and balances the overall flavor.
- Butter: Adds flavor and tenderness. Use dairy-free if needed. I love to bake with Becel plant-based bricks.
- Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the cupcakes and helps create a soft, moist texture. You can substitute organic cane sugar or monkfruit.
- Vegetable Oil: Keeps the cupcakes extra moist and tender. Any neutral-tasting oil will work.
- Vanilla Extract: A must-have for warm, cozy vanilla flavor.
- Eggs: Bind everything together and help the cupcakes rise. An egg-free/vegan alternative would be 2 flax eggs (2 tablespoons of ground flax + 5 tablespoons warm water). Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to thicken. The texture will be denser with an egg sub.
- Milk: Use dairy or your favorite non-dairy alternative. The higher the fat content, the yummier. I bake with almond milk.
- Mini Chocolate Chips: Tiny bursts of chocolate throughout each bite. Use dairy-free chips if needed. Pascha chocolate is my go-to dairy-free baking chocolate.
For the Frosting
- Salted Butter: The base of our frosting—fluffy, creamy, and rich. Use dairy-free if needed.
- Powdered Sugar: Sweetens the buttercream and gives it a smooth texture. A sugar-free alternative like Swerve can be used.
- Vanilla Extract: Adds flavor to the frosting and complements the cupcake base.
- Fine Sea Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the vanilla.
- Mini Chocolate Chips (optional): A fun and tasty garnish for the finished cupcakes.
- Sparkly Sprinkles (optional): A splash of extra fun and glam.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Cupcakes
Baking chocolate chip muffins is quick, easy, and oh-so satisfying. With a few simple steps, you’ll have golden, fluffy muffins packed with melty chocolate chips fresh from the oven. Follow these tips to get that perfect bakery-style rise and irresistible flavor every time.
Cupcakes
- Preheat & Prep: Preheat the oven to 350ºF and line a 12-cup cupcake pan with liners.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar, oil, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy—about 2–3 minutes.
- Add Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape the bowl as needed.
- Alternate Dry & Wet: Add half the dry ingredients and mix on low. Slowly pour in the milk while mixing. (The batter may look slightly curdled—this is normal!) Add the remaining dry ingredients and mix just until combined.
- Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the mini chocolate chips.
- Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the 12 cupcake liners and bake for 15–18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

- Add Powdered Sugar: Add the powdered sugar and mix on low until combined.
- Add Vanilla & Salt: Mix in the vanilla extract and salt, then turn the mixer to high and beat for another 5 minutes. Scrape down the bowl as needed.
Decorating Chocolate Chip Cupcakes
Once the cupcakes are completely cool:
- Prep Piping Bag: Fit a piping bag with a Wilton 1M tip and fill it with vanilla buttercream
- Start the Swirl: Pipe a ruffle swirl starting in the center and circling around and up. Go slow and squeeze steadily for a ruffle-like effect.
- Extra Decor: Top with extra mini chocolate chips and sparkly white sprinkles for a cute (and crunchy) finish!

Chocolate Chip Cupcake Tips & Tricks
Here are a few helpful tips and tricks to ensure chocolate chip cupcake success:
- Room Temperature Ingredients – Make sure your butter, eggs, and milk are at room temp for a smooth, even batter.
- Don’t Overmix – Once you add the dry ingredients, mix just until everything is combined. Overmixed cupcakes are dense and gummy.
- Use Mini Chips – They disperse better and don’t sink to the bottom of the cupcakes.
Fun Cupcake Flavor Twists
These cupcakes are super adaptable. Here are a few ideas to try:
- White Chocolate or Peanut Butter Chips – Use white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a fun and tasty twist.
- Almond Extract – Swap the vanilla with almond for a sweet, nutty flavor.
- Chocolate Buttercream – For the ultimate double chocolate moment.
- Sprinkles – Add sprinkles to the batter and/or frosting for a funfetti-style cupcake!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make these gluten-free?
Yes! Use a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose baking blend. I tested this recipe with great results using a gluten-free mix.
Can I make these dairy-free?
Absolutely. Swap the butter and milk for your favorite dairy-free versions.
Can I use regular chocolate chips?
You can, but mini chips are recommended for more even distribution in the batter. If you use regular chocolate chips, I suggest tossing them with a tablespoon of flour to prevent sinking.
How should I store them?
Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days, or freeze (frosted or unfrosted) for up to 3 months.
