Gluten-Free Apple Galette Ingredients & Swaps

This recipe keeps things simple with a short list of pantry staples. Here’s what you’ll use, why, and any applicable swaps:

  • Premade gluten-free pie crust – Saves time and still gives you that flaky, buttery texture. Any favorite brand works. Use a regular one if you are not gluten-free. You can also make your own gluten-free vegan crust with this easy recipe.
  • Apples – A mix of tart and sweet varieties (like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp) makes the filling pop.
  • Brown sugar – Adds depth and warmth; swap for coconut sugar, organic cane sugar, or monkfruit if preferred.
  • Lemon juice – Brightens the flavor and keeps the apples from browning.
  • Vanilla extract – Adds a subtle richness, but can be omitted if you don’t have any on hand.
  • Cornstarch – Thickens the filling so it sets beautifully. Arrowroot starch also works.
  • Cinnamon – The perfect cozy spice. Adjust to taste or swap for apple pie spice.
  • Fine sea salt – Enhances all the flavors.
  • Egg wash (optional) – Gives the crust a golden finish. Use plant-based milk with a bit of maple syrup for a vegan version.
  • Granulated sugar (optional) – Sprinkled on the crust for sparkle and crunch.
  • Chopped nuts/seeds (optional) – Almonds, pecans, or pumpkin seeds for extra texture and rustic elegance.
  • Salted caramel sauce (optional) – For the ultimate finishing touch.

Easy Gluten-Free Apple Galette Instructions

Making a galette is wonderfully forgiving. Follow these steps for scrumptious success:

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 400ºF and place a rack in the lower middle position. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out crust: Place the chilled gluten-free pastry dough on a lightly floured piece of parchment paper and roll into a circle about ⅛-¼-inch thick.
  3. Mix filling: In a large bowl, gently toss the apple slices with brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, cornstarch, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Assemble: Spread the filling evenly in the center of the crust, leaving a 2-inch border. Fold the edges over the apples, overlapping slightly. If cracks form, pinch them closed.
  5. Finish edges: Brush the crust with egg wash or plant milk, then sprinkle with sugar and nuts/seeds if desired.
  6. Bake: Slide the parchment and galette onto the baking sheet. Bake 40-45 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling all the way through—not just at the edges.
  7. Cool & serve: Let the galette cool for 15–20 minutes before slicing. Drizzle with salted caramel if you like.

Vegan Apple Galette Helpful Hints

A few tricks to make your vegan and/or gluten-free apple galette truly perfect:

  • Mix apple types: Combining tart and sweet apples adds depth of flavor.
  • Check for bubbling: Make sure the center filling is bubbling before removing from the oven so it sets properly.
  • Serve fresh: This dessert is best enjoyed the day it’s baked while the crust is crisp.
  • Quick vegan swap: Use plant milk instead of egg wash and ensure your crust is dairy-free.

Fun Flavor Galette Twists To Try

Want to switch things up? Try one of these tasty ideas:

  • Maple Pecan: Add chopped pecans to the filling and drizzle with maple syrup before baking.
  • Cranberry Apple: Toss in a handful of fresh cranberries for tart bursts of flavor.
  • Apple Ginger: Add grated fresh ginger to the filling for a little spice kick.
  • Caramel Apple: Bake as directed, then finish with a heavy drizzle of salted caramel sauce.

If you have leftovers, store them loosely covered at room temperature or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Keep in mind the crust will soften over time—this galette is best served freshly baked.

Description

Buttery, flaky, and bursting with warm cinnamon apples—this gluten-free apple galette is a show-stopping yet surprisingly simple dessert. Perfect for fall gatherings, cozy weekends, or when you just want something that feels fancy but takes half the effort of pie.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Gluten-Free Apple Galette

  • 1 9-inch prepared gluten-free pie crust
  • 3 apples, peeled, cored, & thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • optional: 1 large egg, whisked
  • optional: granulated sugar
  • optional: chopped nuts and/or seeds
  • optional: salted caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF and place a rack in the lower middle position. Have a large baking sheet ready to use.
  2. Place the chilled pie crust on a lightly floured piece of parchment paper and roll it out into a circle approximately ⅛-¼ inch thick.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, gently toss together the apple slices, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cornstarch, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Spread the apple filling evenly in the middle of the prepared pie crust with a 2-inch border all around the edges.
  5. Fold the edges of the crust over the filling. It’s okay if it overlaps. If the crust cracks anywhere, pinch it back together to avoid leaking.
  6. Brush the crust with the whisked egg and generously sprinkle on granulated sugar and chopped nuts/seeds, if desired.
  7. Slide the parchment paper and galette onto the large baking sheet. Trim any excess edges of the paper if needed.
  8. Bake on the lower middle rack for 40-45 minutes or until the crust is a golden brown and the middle of the apple filling is bubbling. Note: Make sure the entire filling is bubbling and not just the edges. This will ensure the center sets fully after cooling.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool for 15-20 minutes before serving warm. If desired, drizzle on salted caramel sauce and serve with a scoop of ice cream. Enjoy!
  10. Store leftover apple galette loosely covered at room temperature or in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Note: the pie crust will soften as time passes. It’s best enjoyed when freshly baked.
